In the EU,an industrial design can protect any feature related to the appearance of a product that is new and has an originality, such as the design of the product (as long as it does not serve a technical function), the pattern, the material, etc.

 

In USA, design is protected by a design patent.

 

The term of protection in the EU is 5 years and is renewable up to 25 years, while in the US it is 20 years and is subject to renewal fees.
